Sermon from Craig Edwards | Worship leader: Deborah Ridley
Passage: Acts 15:1-35
Last week, Pastor Russ took us through the apostle Paul’s “First Missionary Journey”, described in Acts chapters 13 and 14. Paul, accompanied by the apostle Barnabas, travelled from the city of Antioch in Syria to the southern part of Asia Minor and then back to Antioch. They preached the good news of Jesus Christ wherever they went. God blessed their ministry and many non-Jews (“Gentiles”) became followers of Jesus. In fact, “[t]he word of the Lord spread through the whole region” (Acts 13:49).
Upon their return, Paul and Barnabas reported to the Antioch church “…everything God had done with them and that he [God] had opened the door of faith to the Gentiles” (Acts 14:27).
But then, in Acts 15:1, “some men came down from Judea and began to teach the brothers [at Antioch] : “Unless you are circumcised according to the custom prescribed by Moses, you cannot be saved.”” Wait, what??!!
