Supporting Ukrainians in South Calgary

As the humanitarian crisis worsens in war-ravaged Ukraine, Canada has been bracing for an influx of Ukrainians in the midst of Russia’s invasion of their country.

More than 2.5 million people — mostly women and children — have already fled Ukraine since the start of the conflict on Feb. 24, with neighbouring countries in eastern Europe opening their doors to welcome the displaced civilians.

The Canadian government has launched two special programs to assist Ukrainian nationals to come to Canada on a temporary or permanent basis

Under the Canada-Ukraine Authorization for Emergency Travel program announced by the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), Ukrainians can stay in the country for at least two years, and receive an open work permit. There is no limit on the number of people who are eligible to apply.

Canada is also implementing a special family reunification sponsorship program for permanent residency.

Our Russian Language Ministry at South Calgary also has been receiving and supporting Ukrainian families relocating to Calgary. If you would like to get involved and participate in supporting Ukrainians at South Calgary, see how you can help:

(1) As we had discussed in our last Members' Meeting, we will be

creating a specific fund that you can donate to and we will support Ukrainian families connected (or not) to our Russian Language Ministry as funds are available. For example, we would like to purchase a vehicle(s) and support them in any other needs they may have.

If you would like to donate, please visit the SCCC website for more information at https://www.southcalgary.church/give. When you give, don't forget to mention 'Support 4 Ukrainians' so we can place the proceeds in the right account.

(2) Also, do you have a finished basement, or maybe a bedroom, where you could host temporarily Ukrainian families or individuals? If you do, please get in touch with the church office during office hours.

What a great opportunity to "Bear one another's burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ." Galatians 6:2 ESV
