“His master said to (her), ‘Well done, good and faithful servant! You were faithful over a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Share your master’s joy.’
We are saddened to learn of the passing of Mary Nielsen on Friday evening, October 8th.
For over thirty years, Mary has been a friend of so many here at South Calgary, especially at the Seniors Luncheons and trips, and the Senior Women's bible study. Mary always had a smile for you and a great story to tell. No one was a stranger to Mary, just a friend to share the journey.
An avid knitter, Mary gladly accepted the challenge presented at a Seniors luncheon in September of 2005 to lead a small group of 5 women and knit dolls for Dr. Brooks' medical clinic in Malawi, Africa. Mary and the women presented Dr. Brooks with 35 dolls two months later.
It's amazing to look back and see the impact of one woman, Mary, stepping forward to knit a few dolls and lead others to join her. Knitting dolls continues today. Since 2005, over 100 women have shared in this project. Many meet on Tuesday mornings to knit together. Every doll has been admired and enjoyed. Every doll has been counted, reaching over 38,100 dolls as of Tuesday, October 12! These colorful creations have found the way into the hands of children and families in local hospitals, hospice, shelters, and around the world through mission trips, humanitarian groups, and Operation Christmas Child Shoeboxes.
We offer our condolences to the Mary Nielsen's daughter and her family, Lisa and Dennis Forget, grandsons Eric and Jordan and their families. A memorial service for Mary is planned for October 29 at McInnes & Holloway SE. Due to current restrictions, attendance is limited. Please check space availability with the church office.
