Deborah and I are honored to serve within South Calgary by being involved in the Seniors Ministry. The primary activity of the Seniors Ministry is the monthly Friday gathering consisting of a “Coffee and Chat” or a “Seniors Lunch” on alternating months.
Our Coffee and Chats consist of coffee, refreshments, and visiting followed by an interactive Bible Study. Our desire in the Bible Study is to become more effective disciples of Jesus. In the past year, topics have been as diverse as gaining a better understanding of how to respond to difficult times in life; relying on God as our foundation during storms rather than trying to avoid storms; the challenges of forgiveness; and how to be a disciple in politically divisive times.
Our Seniors lunches are a bit of false advertising. Because we use the word lunch, some people think of dainty sandwiches, a small salad and a tiny square for dessert. The truth though, is that we enjoy an amazing banquet prepared by Mary and her team of volunteers. After we have enjoyed visiting and a filling meal, we have several songs and a devotion, again with the desire to help us understand what it means to be a disciple of Jesus. If you have not attended the seniors’ events yet, the Christmas Banquet on December 12 is a great time to join us.
One old/new activity in 2025 was to have an Operation Christmas Child Shoe Box Packing Party as part of our November Coffee and Chat. This is something that had been part of the ministry until covid disrupted our world, and we have brought it back. We had 17 people who together brought items, and 47 boxes were packed!
We want to thank Mary and her team for preparing incredible meals and refreshments for the coffee times. She and her team of volunteers put in many hours and do a wonderful job.
George and Deborah Ridley
